Standing Blue Bunny

My husband was a hard no on chickens. That’s how Doebuck Blues started.

For years, I dreamed of our homestead, and the farm fresh eggs our son Rowan would gather each day. The resourceful, modern, Laura Ingalls Wilder I’d embody (long before the Target dress challenge) whilst cooking with our backyard bounty. Of course chickens would be our first addition.

One global pandemic, and a few marital discussions later, rabbits advanced from second to first place and it was time to make a decision on breed.

Jumping Blue Rabbit

Blue rabbits, singularly unusual and striking, and the American Rabbit the bluest of all breeds.

At that time, Americans were still on the critically endangered list. The “Great Drift” was happening. Dedicated breeders were working hard to spread genetics (& rabbits) across the country to ensure these beautiful rabbits’ survival!

We are extremely happy to have chosen the American Rabbit. In addition to our gorgeous blues, we offer ruby-eyed white, and black (not yet ARBA approved-  you can jump them though). My friend JL up in Georgia is working on their approval!

By the way, I’m still negotiating with Rob for those chickens.

Knowing how important it is to conserve Heritage Livestock, I joined the Livestock Conservancy, and would suggest everyone interested in Heritage Livestock do the same.
